Dr. Randy Guttery
Dr. Randy Guttery continues to teach large sections of Real Estate Finance, Real Estate Valuation, and Real Estate Principles, both at the BBA and MBA levels. For Fall 2005, he has 188 students! He recently had his article, "Life Settlements: Implications for Investment Real Estate" published in the Real Estate Law Journal. Dr. Guttery has been busy with the media, as well. He appeared on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams this summer, commenting on credit card fraud and identity theft. He also taped a 30 minute show for The McCuistion Hour, which aired on PBS September 4, 2005. The show discussed the June 23, 2005 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Kelo v. The City of New London, CT, whereby the court ruled against Ms. Kelo in a landmark eminent domain case. Dr. Guttery is quoted regularly in USA Today, The Dallas Morning News, Fort Worth Star Telegram and other print media.
On a personal note, Dr. Guttery, who is from the Baton Rouge New Orleans area, has dealt with the Hurricane Katrina tragedy extensively. His entire extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins were displaced by the storm. Several family members have lost everything, as you have seen on TV. Currently, the other family members are housing over 35 relatives for an unknown period of time. Please keep Dr. Guttery's family in your thoughts. 940-565-3073.
Professor Mike Braswell
Professor Mike Braswell reports that the Texas Apartment Association (TAA) has selected the University of North Texas for a unique Residential Property Management Program (RPM) that leads to a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree. The professional field component of this degree is in Real Estate with a concentration in RPM. This new concentration is ideal for prospective students desiring rewarding careers in Texas' multifamily rental housing industry. The RPM concentration modifies existing real estate courses and adds others to integrate the special needs of RPM into the curriculum. Custom-integrated courses include Property Management (REAL 4200) offered every semester and Property Management Law (BLAW 4790) offered each spring which covers landlord and tenant issues and the material in the TAA Redbook. The TAA Educational Foundation (TAAEF) has awarded $500,000 for a permanent endowment for the Texas Apartment Association Professor of Residential Property Management. Additionally, the TAAEF has raised a like amount for student scholarships. The first TAAEF/Larry Niemann Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 per semester were awarded for Fall 2005. An additional 5 scholarships are available for the Spring 2006 semester. Check in the FIREL office or the website for application details. In addition the TAAEF holds an Education Conference and Lone Star Expo each spring. This year the conference will be held in San Antonio, May 11 - 13, 2006. Around 1300 professionals from the industry attend. It is a great opportunity to network and find jobs or internships. We usually take 10-15 students each year.
